WTU Wins Favorable Ruling in Writ of Mandamus Case Filed on Behalf of D.C. Teachers

D.C. Public Schools Closures: Less Wages, Fewer Benefits and Reduced Pensions for Teachers

Dear WTU Members:

As you may know, the Washington Teachers’ Union recently recovered the $1.2 million Teacher Annuity and Aid Distribution Fund.  Originally established exclusively for white teachers in 1894 by the Teachers’ Annuity and Aid Association of the District of Columbia, the Teacher Annuity and Aid Distribution Fund provides one-time financial assistance to members with permanent and temporary disabilities and help off-set medical costs.

While WTU is delighted to make this financial assistance available to our members during a time when they need us most, it is important to remember that we have reviewed your Teacher Annuity and Aid Distribution Fund applications and distributions have been made based on the severity of the member’s described disability.

Although WTU originally planned to provide members with distributions of up to $2,500.00, a court order simply limited each fund distribution payment to $600.00; unfortunately, the court order was not modified in time to affect the 2011 Teacher Annuity and Aid Distribution Fund payments that are required to go out no later than December 31 or before the end of the calendar year.

As always, WTU is dedicated to fulfilling a commitment to build great minds by improving the quality of support, resources, compensation and working conditions for public servants and proud teachers, like you, who educate students in D.C. Public Schools.  We look forward to sharing information about the 2012 Teacher Annuity and Aid Distribution Fund as soon as it is available.

Teachers As Leaders
Join the WTU Teachers as Leaders Program

1.      Have you seen news reports or talk shows that discussed issues related to teaching and learning and thought to yourself or said to your colleagues, “Why don’t they just ask a real teacher about (No Child Left Behind)?” The Teachers as Leaders Program is a new union program designed to help prepare YOU to be that classroom teacher, facilitating a discussion of the issues that affect our profession both here in the District of Columbia and nationally.

We are seeking teachers interested in collaborating with colleagues across the city and nation to:

  •  Increase the understanding of the major challenges facing the teaching profession
  • Improve leadership skills
  •  Represent our profession as spokespersons
  •  Become members of an influential and supportive network of educators

This pilot program will take place Spring 2012, with a plan to expand into the 2012-2013 school year. Modest stipends will be offered.
